"It takes one to know one."
That phrase means a lot to our founders Jeff Zupancic and Art Dinkin because they are Advisors themselves.
Jeff's father was a career financial services man who refused to hire Jeff until he got some "life experience". So after a few years trying different jobs in foodservice and the hospitality industries, Jeff once again applied for a position at his father's agency. By this point, it was obvious to everyone that Jeff was passionate about helping others by providing quality financial products and services.
Art found the industry almost by accident. After studying Engineering, he found himself dissatisfied with the first couple of jobs he had after college. The problem-solving aspects were fine, but Art craved more direct interaction with people. So he quit and went to work for his Uncle who ran an insurance agency in Connecticut.
Even though they would not meet each other for years to come, there are many parallels to the career paths both Jeff and Art followed. They each went from building clients into management where they held several positions for large companies in the Home Office as well as Field Management. They each left their companies after giving "corporate America" a try and realizing that they were happiest when they were free to serve clients and not a mammoth corporation. By now they had each been transferred and relocated. Jeff was in Phoenix and Art had settled in Des Moines. They each walked away from the security of a management career in financial services to go back to the beginning and build a business based on clients.
"If I had to do it all over again, I would do it differently."
This is another phrase that means a lot to Art & Jeff. Not many people get a second chance to do it all again, and neither of them was going to let this opportunity slip away. They built their clientele one at a time delivering personalized services and individualized recommendations to the best of their abilities. They each associated with independent Broker-Dealers who also offered services through a Registered Investment Advisor, but neither could completely put management in their past. Other reps took notice of their work and soon were asking to become part of their team. Both Jeff and Art became OSJ's (Office of Supervisory Jurisdiction) for the Broker-Dealer which meant that they had supervisory responsibilities for other representatives in addition to their client work.
It was as OSJ's that fate would bring the two of them together. Coincidentally, they were the two largest OSJ organizations for the same Broker-Dealer. At compliance meetings, they discovered they each had similar outlooks, approaches, and objectives. As their friendship developed, so did the candor in their discussions. They were frustrated by unnecessary barriers which made it difficult to fulfill their fiduciary responsibilities to clients, so they decided to form their own RIA.

Their mutual discontent and frustrations paired with their growing friendship, similar ideologies, and complementary business skills lead to the founding of Independent Wealth Network - the new breed of Registered Investment Advisor. Our independence provides the opportunity and transparency to conduct business the correct way, compliant with all regulations and requirements, as fiduciaries serving the best interests of our clients.
